This year’s eclipse season begins with a turbulent, emotional South Node lunar eclipse. The Sun will be exalted in Aries opposing and casting a shadow on a Libra Moon. The lunar nodes have opened a chapter teaching us lessons about the Aries - Libra axis and this Full Moon is a test. This axis is interesting because it is all about the dichotomy between the Self (Aries) and the Other (Libra). Aries, the fiery warrior, is the first sign of the zodiac embodying originality, individuality, action, and leadership. The quality of Aries reminds us to prioritize and assert ourselves because, at the end of the day, that’s really all we have. This trip we take across this universe is a solo soul journey. But we don’t exist in a vacuum. We are constantly encountering people, even if they come and go throughout our lifetime(s). And so, this is the balance that Libra brings to Aries. Libra, represented by the scales, reminds us that there are other people we are always in relation to or with, and we should strive for harmony and balance with these other souls.
The thing about eclipses is that they are deeply fated events, the outcomes of which have been inscribed on the universe from the beginning of time. These are the moments when amor fati must be embraced fully for the smoothest possible experience. It’s no good trying to force a different outcome lest you get more and more frustrated going against the grain and feeling trapped.
The North Node is known as the mouth of the dragon; it represents an insatiable energy, with a desire to pursue and devour what it meets as it goes along. On the opposite end is the South Node, the tail of the dragon, representing all that must be released from what is encountered. The North Node in Aries wants to amplify the Self, while the South Node in Libra wants us to let go of the Other. We can interpret this South Node Lunar Eclipse as one that is telling us to release bad relationship dynamics—the kind that force us to compromise on our boundaries, or cause us to lose ourselves. If we approach the Lunar Eclipse with this in mind, the restrictive vibes we’ll get won’t feel so doomed. We won’t be losing anything, for you can’t lose what truly belongs to you, so we just have to trust that all the things that make their exit are being cleared out for a higher purpose.
Full Moons are the culmination point of a 6-month cycle that initiated during that sign’s New Moon. In this case, the New Moon in Libra on October 14, 2023 (also a Solar Eclipse) was the starting point to this cycle that’s reaching its end this week. This is a good time to reflect on what was going in your life—and the world—last October and consider what new beginnings you were experiencing and how they are wrapping up, transforming, or transitioning into a new phase. Eclipse season is just kicking off with this Full Moon, however, so it’s time to strap in and treat these next two weeks like an interdimensional portal. Instead of struggling against the tides of fate, simply enjoy observing what comes and goes, the rhythms of Time itself. This is ultimately a time for great personal development, for the individual self and the self who is always in relation to and with other people.
Other dynamics influencing this Full Moon are Venus in Pisces, Jupiter approaching Uranus in Taurus, and Mercury slowing down his movement in Aries. Venus is acting as the dispositor of both the Full Moon and Jupiter and Uranus, which means these planets are currently in Venus’ homes of Taurus and Libra. Their “work,” so to speak, is being judged and evaluated by Venus and she is the acting puppetmaster of the drama playing out. Currently exalted in Pisces Venus is giving the Lunar Eclipse a dream-like quality, but we should be careful not to get too wrapped up in the escapist urge to ignore what’s going on. Similarly, with Jupiter and Uranus coming closer and closer in Taurus, we have to remember that there’s always a dark side to our imagination. If you can day-dream up the loveliest fantasies to escape to, you also risk weaving the most nightmarish tales in your head that will consume you.
Mercury ingressed into an Aries aggressively, but he’s starting slow down, remembering something he forgot along the way. He’ll station retrograde on April 1st, at which point we’ll be in the throes of retracing our steps and reconsidering all the steps we’ve taken in life lately. A Mercury Retrograde happening during an eclipse season will make us feel like we’re going a little crazy. It’s okay to go a little wild, but remember that every action has an equal, opposite reaction, nothing comes without a price. If we don’t maintain order and balance in our life, the universe will do it for us.
